Big Walnut isn’t going to the playoffs this year, but they finished the 2016 season with their best effort, a 36-35 double-overtime victory on the road against Canal Winchester.
The Golden Eagles scored first on a David Hunt 4-yard touchdown run, with Tyler Shuster hitting the point after with 7:40 in the first quarter. The drive was set up by a 50-yard completion by Tyler Ronk to Cody Priestas.
Later, the Eagles were about to tack on a field goal, but the attempt was blocked and returned for an apparent Indians touchdown. However, a penalty negated the score, but Canal retained possession. They converted on a fake punt, and drove down near the goal line. Big Walnut’s defense stiffened, forcing the offense to call two timeouts on fourth down. Senior quarterback Trevor Harrison-rawn completed a 4-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Cameron Metzler, and Trevor Thompson made the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:45 left in the half.
Following a Ronk interception, the Indians drove 38 yards to take a 14-7 lead, with Harrison-rawn connecting again with Metzler, this time from 8 yards out. A couple plays later, Hunt slashed and darted through the defenders for a 60-yard touchdown that put the junior running back over 1,000 yards on the season, tying the game at 14-14 with about 4 minutes until halftime. Hunt finished with 214 yards on 28 attempts.
Harrison-rawn was intercepted by defensive back Jackson Seiple, and Big Walnut cashed in with another Hunt touchdown, from 26 yards with just over a minute in the half. Senior linebacker Kaleb Kocak sacked Harrison-rawn to snuff out a Canal Winchester drive, and Big Walnut led 21-14 halfway through.
The Indians tied it up at 21-all with about two minutes to go in the third quarter when Jacob Robertson rushed it to the house from 46 yards out. Both teams held firm throughout the fourth, so it was on to overtime.
Big Walnut got the ball first, and Hunt carried the ball twice for all 20 yards to put the Eagles up 28-21. Canal Winchester struck right back, with senior running back Nick Tiell carrying it the final six yards. It was 28-28 going to a second overtime.
Tiell got the call again, and scored on a 5-yard run to put the Indians up 35-28. Not to be outdone, Hunt scored again, on a 3-yard carry. Big Walnut went for the 2-point conversion, and senior running back Evan Garcia smashed over the south goal line to give the Eagles an exciting 36-35 victory.
