Orange made a serious statement as a program and Buckeye Valley’s Zach Kreft made plenty of noise, too, picking up a pair of impressive wins in the distance events to highlight Friday’s (May 5) Delaware County Elite 8 Championship in Lewis Center.

The Pioneers won team titles in both divisions … and by a lot, not a little. Orange’s boys more than doubled the point total of any other team while the girls outpaced the field by more than 40 points.

Kreft, meanwhile, beat out Orange’s Hunter Moore by just over a second to win the 1,600 (4:15.33). Kreft and Moore are two of the best distance runners in the state, let alone the county. Kreft also won the 3,200, taking top honors with a time of 10:10.54.

Other standouts on the girls’ side included Buckeye Valley’s Nina Hilt, who won the 100 hurdles (15.22 seconds); Liberty’s Abby Summers, who won the 100 (12.51 seconds) and 200 (25.89 seconds); the Patriots’ Sydney Englehart, who won the 400 (59.80 seconds); Liberty’s Emma Bower, who picked up first-place points in the 3,200 (11:48.95); Liberty’s Mollie Kunar, who won the shot put (33-10.75); and Big Walnut’s Kaley Rammelsberg, who won the high jump (5-04).

On the boys’ side, winners that weren’t on Orange’s squad or named Zach Kreft included Liberty’s Jonathan Mace in the 110 (15.23 seconds) and 300 (42.32 seconds) hurdles, Big Walnut’s Tim Rumas in the 100 (11.04 seconds), Olentangy’s Anthony Sasso in the 800 (1:59.04), Big Walnut’s Brandon Mosher in the shot put (52-10.50) and the Golden Eagles’ Abe Myers in the discus (164-10.50).

Liberty’s girls finished second, followed by Big Walnut, Olentangy, Hayes, Buckeye Valley, Delaware Christian and Village Academy.

Olentangy’s boys nabbed runner-up honors in their division. Big Walnut finished third, Liberty closed fourth, Buckeye Valley was fifth, Hayes finished sixth and Village Academy smoothed out the scoring summary in seventh.

· Our record is now 79-9

Coach Joe Evener: The girls finished in 3rd last night in the rain soaked Delaware County Elite 8 meet. We qualified in 16 of the events against the best of Delaware County, double qualifying in many of the events. We weren’t able to have everyone who qualified compete as it moves too fast, and as it would have been illegal to have Kaitlin compete in 6 events.

There were some terrific performances by the girls: 8 PRs 1 champion, and 3 near school records (yes, in a constant, cold downpour). That just shows how much of a competitive spirit they have.

I continue to be impressed with the young team. Every week they battle their hearts out, and amaze me. Our strength has to be in the distance. In a The 4×800 team of Kaitlin Meade, Becca Bogantz, Adelee Gartner, Emma Padgett ran just 5 seconds off of the 21 year old school record; Kaitlin Meade was only 0.01 of a second from breaking the 800 school record; and Colbi was 3 seconds from breaking the 3200 record.
