BWHS Spring Sports Roundup

Staff Reports

Alex Thomas connected on a game-tying homer in the fourth inning, but Bloom-Carroll launched a home run of its own in the eighth to escape with a 2-1 extra-inning win in a Division II district semifinal Tuesday in Pickerington.

The Golden Eagles never really got going from the plate. Stacey Walters, Jess Coletta and Katie Neff had singles while Thomas finished with BW’s lone run and RBI.

Thomas did all she could from the circle, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking four in eight innings of work. She fired 141 pitches when all was said and done.

Aubrey Willet, who picked up the win for Bloom-Carroll, was also the hero at the plate, with her extra-inning homer proving to be the difference.

She allowed a run on four hits while striking out two en route to the complete-game win.

Devan Gilmore drove in the Bulldogs’ other run while Bailee Cox had a game-best two hits in the win.

River Valley 9, Buckeye Valley 1

Nicole Peak and Rilee George collected four of the Barons’ five hits, two apiece, but they didn’t amount to runs as River Valley rolled to a Division I district semifinal win Tuesday at Olentangy.

The Vikings set the tone with a three-run first and, after the Barons answered with a run in the second, they added two in the third and four in the fifth to smooth out the scoring summary.

Madi Myers led River Valley with a pair of home runs and five RBI.

Coach Joe Evener’s comments: We had a solid district meet. We knew it was going to be a tough one. There is no such thing as an easy Division I District, and I believe we were in the most difficult having 7 schools seeded ahead of us in the district. The girls continued to show why we have had such a successful season, they competed hard, supported each other, and gave everything they had. The results show, 6 regional qualifiers, 2 school records (almost a 3rd), 6 personal records (PRs), and 4 season best performances. What more can a coach ask for?

I am very proud of the girls, and what they have accomplished together as a team, and they have definitely embodied the meaning of team. Their 94 wins (94-17 record) ties for the 2nd most wins in my 23 seasons (2000 – 97 wins, 2013 – 94 wins); plus add 3 invitational titles including our first OCC title since 2004. These young ladies have been thrilling to coach, fun to watch, and I can’t thank them enough.

I have to acknowledge the coaching staff. They pour their hearts and souls into making this team better each and every week. Coach Red Edwards (hurdles), Coach Mike Ryder (jumps), Coach Kevin Lewis (distance), Coach Jim Boyd (throws), and Coach Megan Massingill (vault) are second to none when we walk into a meet. We may get beat occasionally but it’s never because we are out worked or out coached and these wonderful coaches are why.
