HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (June 29, 2017) – Making his Lizards’ debut, Joe LoCascio scored a game-winning, two-point goal with under a minute left in regulation to help the Lizards upset the Ohio Machine 15-14 Thursday night at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The win ended both the Machine’s league-best, five-game winning streak and spoiled their undefeated record on the road. They are now 7-3; the Lizards are 4-5.
While it was a slow start for both teams, it became a back and forth battle in the second half with both teams alternating runs. The Lizards led the game until the end of the third quarter when the Machine began to outscore them 7-1 with goals from Tom Schreiber, Jake Bernhardt and Mark Cockerton.
Kevin Unterstein and newly acquired Will Manny scored goals less than 10 seconds apart in the fourth quarter to cut Ohio’s lead to one goal. Less than three minutes later, LoCascio took a feed from Paul Rabil and netted the eventual winning goal.
Players of Note
- Will Manny scored five goals in his debut with New York after being acquired via trade from Boston on Tuesday. It marked his most goals in a single game since he had six on May 14 last season against Rochester.
- Goaltender Drew Adams saved 18 of the 32 shots on goal.
- Jake Bernhardt finished the game with a season-high points and a hat-trick (3 goals, 3 assists).
- Tom Schreiber recorded five points for the Machine (4 goals, 1 assist) and Mike Cockerton finished with a hat-trick.
MLL All-Star Game Roster announced
Joe Walters, Paul Rabil headline All-Star Game roster
BOSTON (June 22, 2017) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier outdoor professional lacrosse league, announced the roster for the 2017 MLL All-Star Game. The second consecutive game in the state of California will take place on Saturday, July 8 at Papa Murphy’s Park in Sacramento and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
New York Lizards midfielder Joe Walters will be making his ninth career appearance in the All-Star Game, the most among this year’s elected players. His teammate, Paul Rabil, has the second-most All-Star Game appearances, as this will be his eighth selection.
“This All-Star Game roster is going to showcase the depth of talent in MLL,” Commissioner David Gross said. “You will see familiar faces in the game that have been star performers in the league for several years, but you will also see newer faces that you may not know. There is a wave of young talent coming up in the league that we are excited to have on display.”
The two teams that met in the 2016 MLL Championship Game, the Denver Outlaws and Ohio Machine, are tied for the most All-Star selections with seven apiece. Reigning Coca-Cola MVP Tom Schreiber will represent the Machine for the fourth time in his career.
For the defending champion Outlaws, brothers Matt and Mike Bocklet will both play in the game. For Matt Bocklet, a defenseman, this marks his fifth selection to the All-Star Game, while Mike will make his All-Star Game debut.
Faceoff specialist Greg Gurenlian will make his fourth appearance in the All-Star Game. A former Coca-Cola MVP and a Steinfeld Trophy winner, Gurenlian announced this past offseason that the 2017 season would be his last in MLL. Gurenlian has won more faceoffs than any player in league history, and recently became the first player to eclipse 2,000 faceoff wins in a career.
All-Star Game Weekend will include a two-day youth lacrosse tournament in conjunction with ADVNC Lacrosse at Cherry Island Sports Complex. Former MLL All-Star and San Francisco Dragons captain Chris Rotelli designed and directs ADVNC Lacrosse, a leading lacrosse training and events company in Northern California. Day one of the tournament will include a skills competition for youth participants and the MLL Skills Competition.
The day of the All-Star Game will kick off with MLL Fan Fest, which will include opportunities to meet MLL players, brand experiences, product demos, live music and interactive exhibits.
This marks the 16th edition of the MLL All-Star Game and the first ever All-Star Game in Northern California. Papa Murphy’s Park is home to Sacramento Republic FC, a club in the United Soccer League.
